Woolley Gallery and Center for Photographic Inquiry Contact: Susan Porter (207) 775-0678 or inquiry@addisonwoolley.com Portland, ME., September 1, 2008 –- Addison Woolley Gallery, and its co-hosts Maine Media Workshops, photographer Jack Montgomery, Vox Photographs, Domaine Gallery and The Pepper Club, is pleased to welcome speakers Stephen Perloff and Susan Danly who will offer their insights about the collecting of photographs on Thursday, September 11th, 2008 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Addison Woolley. The evening will include a reception for the speakers. Stephen Perloff, a respected writer, educator and photographer, is editor and publisher of The Photo Review in Philadelphia, as well as, The Photograph Collector and The Photographic Art Market. Susan Danly, highly regarded curator of Graphics, Photography and Contemporary Art at The Portland Museum of Art is known for her vast knowledge of photography and her keen eye for building the museum’s collection as well as her skill at curating the blockbuster photography exhibits of recent years. The lecture and discussion will address the aesthetic, historic, and value considerations of collecting. Danly will talk about why museums collect and display, and Perloff will talk about why individuals collect. Perloff’s, The Photo Review, began more than 30 years ago as a regional journal and has grown to serve the international photographic community not only as a publication of insightful and in-depth articles, but also as an information clearinghouse for all things photographic. It supports the work of individual photographers through auctions, contests, publication of work, portfolio review opportunities, gatherings and more. Interestingly enough, Susan Porter, owner of Addison Woolley first became acquainted with Perloff, through telephone and e-mail, over ten years ago, after the death of Al Woolley one for whom the gallery is named. Woolley had contributed photographs to The Photo Review auctions and Perloff subsequently published a tribute to Woolley by Porter. The lecture event will be the first time Perloff and Porter actually meet each other. Collecting Photographs: What’s it all About? Thursday, September 11th, 2008, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Addison
