In Photographs, In Paintings …
Portland, ME., May 21, 2008 -- Three artists have incorporated the camera in their individual processes to create the art to be exhibited at Addison Woolley Gallery in June. Optical principles have influenced the work of artists from Vermeer to Andy Warhol and this exhibit will offer perhaps a little nod to each. Paul Brahms paints from a photograph with a rich use of acrylics that balances light and color in perfect symmetry. Victor Romanyshyn’s photographs each feature one of his abstract paintings as background for his subtle still lifes, lit only by the light from his studio window. He waits for just the right angle of light before he can complete the composition. And Jeanne Hayman creates lithographs from photographs of iconic images of women throughout art history, such as Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, printed in multiple repetitions.
